Bedding that Brings You Joy
Marie Kondo, Japanese organizing consultant extraordinaire, has taken the world by storm with her Konmari Method of organization. She emphasizes the importance of everything in your life sparking joy; if it doesn’t, you toss or donate it. We love this method of cleaning for joy, so we’ve put together 10 easy changes you can make to help your bedroom spark joy.
1. Wash your sheets
It’s a simple fix, but when your room is feeling dull, try giving your sheets a wash. Sometimes refreshing the softness of your bed and adding the smell of a fabric softener sheet is all you need as a pick me up.
2. Greet your room (Hi Room!)
It probably sounds silly, but greeting your room is a great way to get yourself in a good mood. Think about it; your bedroom does so much for you. It keeps you safe, it provides privacy, and it allows you to relax. When entering, saying a quick hello acknowledges all it does for you and the appreciation you feel. That’s sure to lift your mood!
3. Declutter drawers and closets
There is a proven link between clutter and stress. When you have a busy life, moving from one activity to the next, it’s easy to become complacent and throw your things anywhere that there’s space. Decluttering, while time consuming, is a rewarding endeavor that can pay off in spades in terms of mood.
Hint: Even when you don’t have a ton of time, you can still declutter. Start with a small area and work your way around the room as you have time. Though it may be a slow process, eventually you will come out with a much more tranquil room.
4. Select the perfect lighting
Ok, what do we mean by perfect lighting? Well, there are two things to keep in mind. First, you should find lighting that fits the style of your room’s decor. This will help make the space cohesive. Second, the lighting should be unique to you. If you don’t want your great-grandmother’s lamp passed down through generations, then don’t use it! Last, and most importantly, you should pick lighting that’s going to aid in your sleep. This means NO BLUE LIGHTING.
What is blue lighting, you might be asking. Blue light is the type of light that is emitted from your phone. It’s great at keeping you awake, not so great at helping you sleep. When it comes to nighttime, switch your lights to a soft yellow for optimal sleepy-times.
5. Always make your bed
This may have been a chore that you hated when you were a child, but having discipline and making your bed each morning is a great way to start your day. It’s also a small accomplishment that you can start the day with.
6. Arrange by color
There are two things that are pleasing to the eye: organization and color. Together, they’re a knockout combination for any closet. This is also a quick way to organize your space, make it easy to find specific clothing, and create a style that is all your own. Remember, this is dependent on your personal clothing, so even though it’s based on a system, the look will be unique.
7. Ecologically sustainable bedding
Most of us spend 8 hours per night in bed. Why not opt for bedding that is good for you, and the environment? Sheets, like made products, can be made of toxic chemicals and are created in unfair and environmentally damaging ways. Picking a brand that you can trust to have your health and the environment in mind is a switch that is well worth your time.
8. Choose the right smells
Often overlooked, the smell of your room is very important. It can actually have an impact on your mood. For instance, if you’re looking to relax before bed, spraying a lavender linen spray on your pillow will help your mind relax enough to drift off. Looking to get a little stress relief? Put a few drops of jasmine essential oil in a diffuser and watch the stress melt away. Bottom line, what you’re smelling is important to your wellbeing.
9. Music, music, music
One of the easiest ways to make a room your own is to incorporate your favorite music. Music can so greatly affect your mood, so it’s important to pick music that’s going to match your feelings. Looking to relax, try some classical or ambient music. Looking to get pumped up for your morning commute? Blast a playlist of your favorite upbeat tunes. Music can affect the mood, so use it to your advantage.
10. Cooling bed sheets
How many times have you woken up, tossing and turning in bed because it’s just too hot? It’s a problem that many people have. What if we told you that it’s a problem that can be solved? The trick is to find sheets that have a breathable fabric. For instance, our Luxury Bamboo Bed Sheets are made of natural materials, allowing air to pass more easily through the sheets. This leads to a cooler night and better sleep!
