5 Ways to Jump Start Your New Year

 Welcome to 2020!

It's a new year and a new decade. With that comes a great deal of pressure to make this the best year yet. There's no need to let the new year overwhelm you. We are only a few days in, after all!

In fact, we've done the work for you and put together a list of the top 5 things you can do to start your year on the right foot.

Replace your sheets

The new year is a perfect chance to not only give yourself a fresh start, but also your bed. While you might not think about it, bedding, like any other object in your house, holds thoughts, feelings, and memories. By replacing your sheets with new, fresh, exciting ones, you’re also welcoming fresh ideas, thoughts, and feelings into your most private space.

Write down your S.M.A.R.T. goals

I’m sure you’ve heard this tip over 1,000 times. Making goals at the beginning of the year always feels like a leap forward, but by February, that stationary bike you bought is collecting dust in a corner and you’re feeling frustrated at your lack of progress, but content to quit now and start over next year. The reason it feels like your goals are failing is because your goals aren’t S.M.A.R.T.

S (specific)

M (measurable)

A (attainable)

R (revelvant)

T (timely)

Each of these things, if applied to the goal during creation, will make it a more achievable and less daunting goal. So, let’s break each down.

A specific goal is one that is clear and concise. You should be able to ask and answer who, what, when, where, and why.

Tracking your progress toward goal completion will add to your motivation. So create goals that you can measure during and know when it has been achieved.

As fun as it may be to have a goal to climb Everest, is it a realistic goal right now? You want your goal to be realistic so you don’t become discouraged when working toward it.

You want your goals to be relevant to you and your journey. Assess whether this is the right goal for you in terms of timing and it’s worth in getting you where you want to go.

Give yourself a time frame. By leaving your goal open ended, you are less likely to complete it. Create your own deadlines.

When writing out your goals, write them in a SMART way!

Non-SMART Goal: I am going to get in shape.

SMART Goal: By January 2021, I am going to lose 15lbs by joining my local gym and doing at least 1 hour of physical activity every day.

Lessen social media consumption

Social media are an ever present force in our daily lives. It dictates what we wear, what we buy, what we think about, and what we discuss. It can also make us less present, making us miss out on important and impactful moments that are around us.

Now, I’m not saying throw your phone in the river. I’m saying prioritize and be mindful of your electronic usage. Instead of going to your phone to fill a void of time, observe the world around you. Take in the sights, sounds, and smells that surround you. You might see something on your commute you might not have seen if you’d had your face in your phone.

Reorganize your space

Ever creatures of habit, coming home to the same space day in and day out can make life feel dull and uninteresting. A quiz fix: reorganize your space. By moving your bed to a new corner and putting a painting on the opposite wall, your whole outlook can change. Want new objects in the space? Go shopping in your own home. Maybe the vase from the dining room would look great on the living room mantle. Give it a shot!

Learn something new

The start of a new year is the perfect time to learn something new. It’s easy to get in a rut, doing the same thing day in and day out. Life starts to feel monotonous, boring, and predictable. The solution? Learn something new. Try a language, take a cooking class, learn to ski, or pick up a new hobby. Learning is the best (and easiest) way to make your life feel fresh!
