How to Determine Bedsheet Quality — Thread Count vs. GSM
Been obsessing over thread count when shopping for bed sheets? We’ve got news for you—it’s not the golden standard you think it is. The whole “higher thread count = better quality” myth is one of the biggest bedding industry misconceptions. If you've been hunting for the perfect sheets based on a four-digit thread count, you might be looking in the wrong place.
So, how do you find the best, highest-quality sheets without falling for these tricky marketing gimmicks? You’re in the right place! Keep reading to discover what truly matters when choosing the perfect bed sheets—so you can sleep soundly without overspending.
What is Thread Count?
Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into a single square inch of fabric, combining vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads. For years, it’s been marketed as the ultimate indicator of sheet quality—but here’s the truth: thread count is an outdated and often misleading standard.
Some fibres are naturally thicker or thinner than others, meaning a lower thread count doesn’t always mean lower quality. Even worse, some manufacturers artificially inflate thread counts by twisting multiple weak yarns together. So, that “luxurious” 2,000-thread-count sheet? It’s likely just a lower-quality fabric with inflated numbers—not softer or stronger than a well-made 350-thread-count sheet. Excessive thread counts can make fabric heavier, coarser, and more prone to ripping.
And when it comes to bamboo viscose sheets, thread count doesn’t even apply. Bamboo fibres are woven so finely that if measured traditionally, our ultra-soft Cosy House sheets would rank around 1,000 TC—except they’re even softer, stronger, and more breathable than high-thread-count Egyptian or Pima cotton.
Bottom line? Thread count isn’t the quality guarantee you’ve been told it is.
What is GSM?
Alright, so thread count isn’t the key to great sheets—so what is? Enter GSM (grams per square metre).
GSM measures the weight of a fabric, giving you a clearer, more transparent indicator of quality than thread count ever could. It also helps you decide whether you want a lighter or denser fabric based on your sleep preferences.
For example, Cosy House Luxury Bamboo Bed Sheets have a GSM of 100, a higher GSM than the majority of competitors on the market. Our 100 GSM measurement is one of the main reasons Cosy House bedding can obtain such a soft and luxurious quality while also being able to supply them at an affordable price.
Just compare the price of a full set of single sheets from us to other brands that still measure by thread count:
Boll & Branch – £240
Cosy House – £67
Brooklinen – £103
Cosy House sheets are coveted for their lightweight breathability, plus their strong durability and seriously soft, silky smoothness. Compare that to microfibre sheets from other brands—most of which measure at 90 GSM or below—and you’ll find that lower GSM sheets are more prone to ripping, pilling, and wearing out after just a few washes.
Our sheets were carefully crafted with not just your sleeping needs in mind, but woven to perform, too.
