What is Thread Count?

Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into a single square inch of fabric, combining vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads. For years, it’s been marketed as the ultimate indicator of sheet quality—but here’s the truth: thread count is an outdated and often misleading standard.

Some fibres are naturally thicker or thinner than others, meaning a lower thread count doesn’t always mean lower quality. Even worse, some manufacturers artificially inflate thread counts by twisting multiple weak yarns together. So, that “luxurious” 2,000-thread-count sheet? It’s likely just a lower-quality fabric with inflated numbers—not softer or stronger than a well-made 350-thread-count sheet.
